Thank you to everyone who took part.<br><br>We got started by asking you to dream big and imagine what a better social media platform could be. Then, we went into more detail to cover a few of the big topics that are on our minds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);font-style:normal;font-weight:700\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Canadian Identity &amp; Inclusion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ads &amp; Monetization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trust &amp; Autonomy,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engagement &amp; Participation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Through all the questions and activities, you highlighted some pain points, some big themes emerged, and we got insight into what you value. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-tertiary-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-tertiary-background-color has-background is-style-wide is-style-wide--1\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pain Points You Called Out<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s pretty safe to say that there\u2019s a lot wrong with social media these days. Here\u2019s a list of the big pain points you identified:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Misinformation and disinformation<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bots and fake accounts<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Intrusive ads and commercial clutter<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Harassment, hate, scams, slow or unclear enforcement<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI-generated clutter that makes it difficult to discern what\u2019s real.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-tertiary-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-tertiary-background-color has-background is-style-wide is-style-wide--2\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Main Themes That Emerged<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-007ce594c967216bd69b630676590f81\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Communal<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You want to support existing communities and develop new ones<\/strong> on Gander Social. Finding connection through proximity and shared interests are central to the experience you want. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The platform should reinforce existing communities, so you can stay&nbsp; connected with family and friends, as well as activities in their own neighbourhoods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-25597486c06ed9c816b2db0d3b134652\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Protective<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Safety is a major concern: <\/strong>you want strong rules and protections tied to accountability. Accounts that spread hate speech need to be banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a few social media followers have put it: you mess with the Honk you get the bonk. That means no leniency for trolls, bullies, scammers, and fake accounts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b792a00a3309fbd621bb70fac41eebf8\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong><strong>Authentic<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A lot of your comments circled ideas of authenticity.<\/strong> Verification of accounts, trying accounts to real people, and banning bots. Timelines cluttered with ads, bot accounts, misinformation and AI-generated content make your social media experience feel inauthentic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">On the other hand, interacting with real connections and the topics you care about make for an authentic experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-tertiary-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-tertiary-background-color has-background is-style-wide is-style-wide--3\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Features You Want<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we asked what matters most to you, a few themes rose to the top. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You want control over your feed, flexible ways to share, verification that balances accountability with privacy, and fact-checking tools that make it easier to trust what you see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">Together, these priorities reflect your vision for a space that feels <strong>authentic, communal, informative, and safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3288d5f9733ff5b2e9517ad78b4096a5\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong><strong>Agency + Feed Control<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(1.502rem, 1.502rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 3.992), 2.5rem);\"><em>&#8220;I want to control what I see.&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6c531013 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p>User agency is a hot topic for us and we were glad to see this one come up: you want more influence over who\/what shows up in your feed. No creepy suggestions based on a website you visited two weeks ago. It turns out opaque algorithms are poor aggregators of content, seldom delivering things you actually want to see and engage with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Quite a few of you suggested a chronological feed option to make things transparent. We\u2019re with you \u2013 surveillance capitalism isn\u2019t for us either. The feed influences how <strong>Authentic<\/strong> the platform feels, and how we connect to <strong>Community.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e238e340929e9bc1b1c5d43982037d5d\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Flexible Sharing&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(1.502rem, 1.502rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 3.992), 2.5rem);\"><em>\u201cI want to be able to post audio, video, images and links.\u201d<\/em><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:0\">You want to be able to share content in all the formats you\u2019re used to, so that you can express yourself and share what matters to you and your connections. We hear you loud and clear and the dev team is hard at work making sure you can post in the formats you want to. Having accessible options for sharing reinforces <strong>Community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c4d328b1561d7e17462547d6f05284de\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\"><strong>Verification&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(1.502rem, 1.502rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 3.992), 2.5rem);\"><em>\u201cA secure way to guarantee that every user is really an actual human being. Preserving anonymity while ensuring that all users are genuinely human.&#8221;<\/em><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:0\">You want accounts connected to real people to reduce abuse, misinformation, and foreign interference while keeping options for anonymity on profiles. This is a bit of departure from the current conversation around verification which tends to focus on age \u2013 often being imposed via legislation.<br><br>We\u2019re glad to hear it, since this is one direction we\u2019ve been exploring ourselves. Privacy is important and so is accountability. This contributes to a more positive <strong>Community <\/strong>that is <strong>Authentic<\/strong> and <strong>Safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0af0ae7c8a918a9a7a9f0d9479a60a84\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Fact-checking + Context Tools<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(1.502rem, 1.502rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 3.992), 2.5rem);\"><em><em>\u201cRestrictions on misinformation \u2014 properly vetted news content only!\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re sick of misinformation too. You want tools that help spot misinformation without extra hassle. Verifying accounts as human should help reduce bots, but they aren&#8217;t the only source of misinfo.<br><br>Our partnership with Get Fact is another piece of the puzzle, alongside Charter aligned moderation policies and engaging community members to identify\/flag misinformation so a moderation team can handle them. So is, you know, allowing news from credible sources to be shared on the platform. We like our facts checked and our journalists accredited.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">Fact checking ensures that the platform remains <strong>Informative<\/strong>, and for many people, keeps the platform <strong>Safe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-tertiary-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-tertiary-background-color has-background is-style-wide is-style-wide--4\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What You Value<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we learned when we first founded Gander, \u201cvalues\u201d can be a pretty nebulous concept. Different people define Canadian values differently and that\u2019s not necessarily a bad thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, we aren\u2019t going to tell you what Canadian Values are or aren\u2019t&nbsp; \u2013 instead we\u2019ve invited you on this journey with us to discover what it really means to be Canadian. At least on social media anyways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what you told us you value online:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-658a36ddb843602ad1074d01e9a2821d\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Privacy and trust<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>You want clear, simple privacy choices and no hidden tracking. You want to know who sees what, why something is in your feed, and how data is handled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-aa84d02e0928b3ff30ab0e1db0b8a9e8\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Local \/ Canadian identity<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>A platform that feels rooted here, welcomes everyone, and lets you set what \u201clocal\u201d means. A strong preference for Canadian hosting (this is non-negotiable for us) and rules you can understand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0890bc11acc743bafa49205e992642cf\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Control and clarity<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tools to set your own experience<\/strong>: feed controls, filters, and mute tools. Fewer black-box decisions. Plain language over fine print.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-85848fc37b1c40eca68f27f398b34889\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Safety with dignity<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Strong rules against harassment, hate, scams, and spam.<\/strong> Fast, visible action when things go wrong, without doxxing or public shaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d2d65f0cf93d26a247b3a5202f55b68e\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Inclusion and accessibility<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spaces that are welcoming to newcomers and marginalized groups<\/strong>. Basics that work for everyone: captions, alt text, readable type, and simple flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-17d5082ed9aa205808813688cef773b6\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Authenticity and human signals<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fewer bots and fake accounts.<\/strong> Clear, optional ways to show you are a real person without exposing your identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8a61b555b48978e1d8e50a9b363059e4\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Transparency and accountability<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Easy reporting, traceable outcomes, and consistent enforcement.<\/strong> Open explanations of major policy or algorithm changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7e251d87e763f5bc431ec90d50256c8e\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Sustainability without surveillance capitalism<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ways to fund the platform<\/strong> that do not rely on tracking people across the web. Comfort with subscriptions or context-based sponsorships over behaviour-based ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bc33233acf292c51ae00417950fd4226\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Data ownership and portability<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Keep data in Canada,<\/strong> with safeguards. Ability to take your account and followers with you if you move services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-tertiary-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-tertiary-background-color has-background is-style-wide is-style-wide--5\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where to next?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:0\">Our development team is working overtime right now to get us into Closed Beta. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">In the meantime, the rest of us are hard at work building an onboarding flow, integrating these findings into our roadmap, and doing the ten million and one things that need to get done as we get ready to welcome you onto Gander Social.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Verification<\/strong>, not just to keep kids safe from harm but to keep those pesky bots and misinfo off the platform. <br><br>Creating a system that preserves anonymity while also tying accounts to real people is critical for us. Doing both is possible but requires some careful thinking\/design\/tech on our end. Your thoughts on verifying to reduce bot traffic fit snugly with how we\u2019re approaching things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><strong>Fact Checking.<\/strong> Another biggie. Thankfully, we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getfact.ca\/\">Get Fact<\/a> in our corner, so we can pilot fact-checking when users report suspected dis\/misinfo. <br><br>We\u2019re also looking at models that blend community participation with professional fact checking services. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.cofacts.tw\/about\">Cofacts from Taiwan<\/a> look to have a workable model.
